A guarantee of $1 million from the gaming profit paid to the borough annually was approved by the Gettysburg Borough Council in the proposed slots casino which is to be built near Straban Township. This agreement was reached Monday, August 14, 2006.
With a vote of 5-4 the deal was approved after more than four months of considering the casino slots. But the agreement cannot be signed unless the state Gaming Control Board decides that the agreement is legal under the state gaming law.
Councilwoman Holly Giles said, "Anyone can sit here and look at our records and see how desperate for money we really are. We are being offered $1 million by a major corporation and, by God, no one else has stepped up (to do that)."
An assurance of more than $1 million for the borough in the years to come is given to the borough by Ted Streeter, council president.
David La Torre, spokesman for the casino investor group Chance Enterprise said, "We respect the feeling of those council members that have an apprehension about gaming. But there is the big picture: Gettysburg stood to make nothing due to an oversight in state law. Now we're making sure they do benefit from this."
